Today, we remember West Columbia Police Department Officer Daniel Wayne Cogburn, Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office Corporal Tommy Prezzy, and County of Orangeburg Magistrate Jefferson Davis Wiggins.
On this date in 1983, Officer Cogburn was shot and killed by a suspect while writing a traffic ticket. The shooter had nothing to do with the traffic stop and fired out of the car window as he drove by the vehicles. The suspect was apprehended and executed for the crime in 1996.
On this date in 1999, Corporal Prezzy was killed after losing control of his patrol car and running off the road. The vehicle flipped several times, and he was ejected.
On this date in 1920, Magistrate Davis was shot and killed while he was attempting to arrest a subject for a prohibition violation.
