Today, we remember Greenville County Chain Gang Guard Ernest L. Drake.

On this date in 1944, Guard Ernest Drake died from wounds sustained two days earlier when he was attacked with an axe by two inmates during an escape attempt. He was supervising a chain gang working on the Geer Highway in Marietta when the two attacked him and struck him with the axe. The men escaped but were quickly recaptured and charged with murder.

Today, we remember South Carolina Highway Patrol Patrolman George Larry Lagroon, South Carolina Highway Patrol Corporal Richard Varn Woods, Lexington County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Sheriff Douglas M. Jones, and Horry County Police Department Corporal Michael Ambrosino.

On this date in 1957, Patrolman Lagroon was killed in an automobile collision near Saluda.

On this date in 1969, Corporal Richard Varn Woods was shot and killed near Beaufort Marine Corps Air Station while attempting to arrest three robbery suspects.

On this date in 1986, Deputy Sheriff Douglas Jones drowned after accidentally driving into a drainage pond during a severe rainstorm.

On this date in 2020, Corporal Michael Ambrosino died after contracting COVID-19 as the result of a presumed exposure while on duty.

Law enforcement officers face dangers of all kinds every day while serving our communities. We are thankful this Berkeley County deputy has been released from the hospital and wish her a full and speedy recovery.
