Ten vacancies in a department budgeted for 29 officers should get the attention of every city leader.
Recruiting is only half of the equation. Departments also have to retain the trained, experienced officers already serving their communities. When neighboring agencies offer better compensation, officers have choices, and departments have to compete for them.
Darlington is right to have a serious conversation about officer pay. Competitive compensation is necessary to build and keep the staffing levels communities expect from their police departments.
