Today, we remember South Carolina Highway Patrol Patrolman Harry Boyd Ray and Easley Police Department Patrolman Woodrow W. Nalley.

On this date in 1958, Patrolman Harry Ray was shot and killed while making a traffic stop near Santee. Unbeknownst to Patrolman Ray, the occupants had just committed an armed robbery and were fleeing the scene when they were pulled over. The suspects shot Patrolman Ray eight times, killing him.

On this date in 1959, Patrolman Woodrow Nalley was shot and killed during a traffic stop on Liberty Drive. He and his partner stopped the vehicle after recognizing the driver and knowing he had a suspended license. Patrolman Nalley spoke to the man for several minutes before calling city hall to see if a bondsman was still working. He then returned to the car to accompany the man to pay a bond. As Patrolman Nalley opened the car’s door, the man opened fire with a .38 caliber pistol, fatally wounding him.

Attacks on law enforcement officers demand the most serious charges and consequences the law allows. Anyone willing to take an officer’s life should face the full weight of the criminal justice system.

The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office reported a deputy-involved shooting early Friday morning.
