On this date in 1900, Officer James Scurry was shot and killed with his own weapon while attempting to make an arrest.
On this date in 2023, Deputy Sheriff Jacob Salrin was killed in a vehicle crash at the intersection of Bluff Road and Windy Drive.

On this date in 1913, Constable James King was shot and killed while responding to assist the county sheriff and a deputy who had just been shot in Middendorf.
On this date in 1941, Patrolman Monroe was killed in a motorcycle accident while on patrol in Florence County. His police motorcycle struck a tractor-trailer, causing fatal injuries.
Today, we remember Marion County Sheriff’s Office-South Carolina Sheriff John McRoy Dozier and South Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper First Class Bruce Kenneth Smalls.
On this date in 1917, Sheriff Dozier suffered a stroke on duty and died the same day.
On this date in 1985, Trooper First Class Smalls was shot and killed during a traffic stop of a reckless driver on I-95 in Jasper County. Unbeknownst to Trooper Smalls, the RV was being driven by a suspect and an accomplice who had just murdered the owner of the vehicle.
