Today, we remember City of Charleston Police Department Patrolman Lawrence Marion Strock & Policeman William E. Raymond, and South Carolina Highway Patrol Patrolman Marion Charles Steele.
On this date in 1932, Patrolman Strock was shot and killed as he responded to a shooting. A man who had shot and wounded another man he had been arguing with in a vacant house shot Patrolman Strock as he approached the house.
On this date in 1919, Policeman William Raymond was shot and killed at the corner of Line Street and Rutledge Avenue by a man he attempted to arrest for disorderly conduct. Policeman Raymond returned fire, then pulled a fire alarm before he collapsed.
On this date in 1966, Patrolman Marion Steele was shot and killed after stopping a vehicle for speeding on Route 1 in Chesterfield County. As Patrolman Steele approached the car, the driver opened fire. Patrolman Steele was able to return fire before he died from his wounds.
