Law enforcement has changed dramatically over the past 52 years. Training is stronger, equipment is better, and officers are better prepared for the situations they may face.

What cannot be eliminated is the danger inherent in the job.

We owe officers the best training, equipment, and preparation we can provide. We also owe them an understanding that even the best-prepared officer can encounter a threat no amount of training can remove.

Officer Christopher DeLong’s death brings that reality painfully close to home.

People gathered Thursday to pay their respects to Columbia Police Officer Christopher DeLong at Dunbar Funeral Home, ahead of his funeral service Friday morning

Today, Officer Christopher DeLong Jr. is laid to rest.

A funeral honors more than a badge and a uniform. It honors the person who wore them, the life he lived, the people he loved, and the service he gave.

As his family, friends, fellow officers, and community gather to say goodbye, we honor Officer DeLong’s service and sacrifice. May those carrying this loss find strength in knowing they do not carry it alone.

A final tribute takes place Friday for Officer Christopher DeLong Jr.

Officers can be answering an ordinary call for service when the circumstances around them change without warning.

We are thankful no Cheraw officers were injured when gunfire struck a patrol car Wednesday night. It is a reminder of how quickly an otherwise routine shift can become dangerous for the officers serving our communities.

Officers rarely know exactly what is waiting for them when they answer a call.

They step into uncertain situations with limited information, knowing circumstances can change in seconds. That unpredictability is one of the dangers officers accept every time they put on the uniform and go to work.

We are thankful the Greenville County deputy shot early this morning is expected to make a full recovery.

The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office reported an officer-involved shooting early Friday morning.
