Today, we remember Nichols Chief of Police Solon Bethea Lewis, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer Charles Levon McNeill, City of Florence Police Department Sergeant Terrence Felipe Carraway, and Myrtle Beach Police Department Police Officer Jacob William Hancher.
On this date in 1949, Chief Lewis suffered a massive heart attack after raiding illegal liquor stills in the rural areas surrounding the Town of Nichols.
On this date in 1974, Officer McNeill was shot and killed after he and another officer issued citations to three hunters for hunting deer in a game sanctuary.
On this date in 2018, Sergeant Terrence Carraway was shot and killed while responding to assist three Florence County Sheriff’s Office deputies who had been shot and wounded while serving a sexual assault warrant at a house off Vintage Drive.
On this date in 2020, Police Officer Jacob Hancher was shot and killed as he and other officers responded to a domestic incident at an apartment in the 400 block of 14th Avenue South at about 10:00 pm.
