Today, we remember Marion County Sheriff’s Office-South Carolina Deputy Elias Grantham, Pickens County SC’s Magistrate Constable Columbus W. Jones, and South Carolina Highway Patrol Corporal Kenneth Jeffrey Johnson.

On this date in 1864, Deputy Grantham was shot and killed while transporting a prisoner to Charleston.

On this date in 1904, Constable Columbus Jones was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a man on a warrant near Kay’s Mill.

On this date in 2002, Corporal Kenneth Johnson was shot and killed while conducting a holiday weekend public safety checkpoint in Berkeley County at 2:15 am.

A suspect aimed a gun at law enforcement officers during a pursuit in York County. The situation could have ended in tragedy, but no officers were injured. When officers are faced with deadly threats, their actions must be swift and decisive. We are thankful for their safety and their commitment to protecting the community.

SLED will now investigate the incident.

Today, we remember South Carolina State Constable John Bunon Amaker and Dispensary Constable Cotesworth Pinckney Fishburne.

On this date in 1927, State Constable J.B. Amaker was shot and killed as he raided a still with other state constables and federal prohibition officers in Horry County, near the Marion County line.

On this date in 1909, Dispensary Constable Pinckney Fishburne and Deputy Dispensary Constable John Altman were shot and killed in Ravenel, South Carolina, while attempting to stop a man from taking a keg of contraband whiskey from the town’s railroad station. Constable Fishburne died of his wound approximately one hour later. Deputy Constable Altman was transported to a hospital in Charleston, where he died three days later.
