Today, we remember South Carolina State Dispensary Commission Constable John Bennett Cornwell, Hampton Town Marshal Wade Hampton Smith, Anderson County Sheriff’s Office SC Deputy Sheriff Christopher Lee Taylor, and Aiken County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Jason Lannes Sheppard.

On this date in 1899, Dispensary Constable John Cornwell succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained as he and another constable attempted to arrest two men for possession of several kegs of illegal liquor.

On this date in 1905, Town Marshal Hamp Smith was shot and killed by men causing a disturbance at a carnival.

On this date in 1992, Deputy Sheriff Christopher Taylor was shot and killed during a traffic stop on SC State 24.

On this date in 2006, Sergeant Jason Sheppard succumbed to injuries sustained when he was struck by a vehicle several hours earlier.

Today, we remember City of Charleston Police Department Patrolman Junius P. Lewis and South Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper Eric Francis Nicholson.

On this date in 1951, Patrolman Lewis was struck and killed by a vehicle while standing on the corner of Rutledge Street and Maple Street.

On this date in 2000, Trooper Eric Nicholson was shot and killed while attempting to stop a bank robbery suspect.
